6 Ways to Stay Motivated when You Have ADHD

Spread the love

It is but normal for people to have difficulty finding motivation sometimes at work or in doing anything. But, for people with ADHD the difficulty of staying motivated is no longer something that rarely happens.  This is because people with ADHD are easily overwhelmed with the things around them. They may know what the problem is but they cannot seem to figure out how to solve it from step one to step two and so on. If you think that you or your loved one is in the same situation, read further and know how to stay motivated despite having the symptoms of ADHD.

Remember that you do not need motivation.

This may seem counter intuitive to what this article has to say but it is all about getting things done just because.  If we just allow ourselves to find a certain motivation just to get something done then we risk finding ourselves not being able to do anything at all. So whenever there is something that needs to be done, avoid the habit of looking for some motivations before you start accomplishing it. Just keep on working and continue to do your tasks and you will be surprised to find yourself feeling so motivated once you see that you are actually getting things done. Know what I mean?

Just do it.

This line is certainly more than just a tagline for a specific product advertisement.  If you have something to do then just do it. Keep in mind that you may have ADHD but this does not mean that you are not capable of doing anything.  So, just do it because you can.  Be thankful that you are not physically disabled to perform your tasks.  Just keep on doing what you need to do because you certainly can and that your ADHD symptoms should not hinder you from doing the things that you are capable of.

Have a sense of urgency.

If you think that the tasks given to you do not have deadlines and so they can just be done whenever you can.  This is when you become a champion of procrastination.  But, if you really want to stay motivated, create your own deadline of your tasks.  This will make you feel some sense of urgency and fuel yourself to move forward and start accomplishing tasks one after the other.

Write your own to-do list.

Your to-do list will help you keep track of tasks that you have completed. It will also help you move from one task to another.  This does not mean that you really should accomplish everything in your daily to-do list in just one day.  You may start working on one or two tasks and spend at least 20 minutes on each task.  What is most important is that you are doing it little by little which is a lot better than procrastinating.

Choose a working buddy.

A buddy can be your best friend or your close officemate.  This person will help you move forward and will quickly pat you in the back whenever you start losing your motivation.  A buddy can be your good source of encouragement.  Make sure as well that this person perfectly knows well about your condition so it would become easier for him to push you towards task completion.

Do not forget to reward yourself.

For every task accomplished you should have a reward for yourself.  The reward is not necessarily extrinsic in nature. After a day’s work when you know that you have accomplished something it would be good to just treat yourself to your favorite music.  Relax in the comforts of your own home while wearing some earphones.  You may also reward yourself by inviting your friend for dinner. Anything can be a reward for as long as it helps you stay motivated.

It does not matter what other people may tell you.  Keep in mind that the difficulty of staying motivated is a part of being an ADHD individual.  But, you should remember as well that there are plenty of ways that you can do to be able to overcome this challenge. If it is causing you much anxiety and stress then know that you can always find help from the people around you and from the web.
