Fashion trends: Return of the retro style
Just as history often repeats itself, fashion also functions in such a cyclical way. It is not a coincidence that many daughters find a jacket or a skirt among their mothers’ old clothes, put them on when going out and become a fashion hit of the night. Fashion has always been very friendly towards old styles, as well as trends and models from the past. When people use the term retro, they have in mind clothes from the period between the 1940s and 1990s, but usually the largest heap of these retro items belongs to the thirty-year period between 1950 and 1980. Depending on the personal preferences of those who like such fashion styles, appreciators of such styles usually try to create their personal style based on the retro approach. And for many of the popular culture and idols from that period still dictate the fashion pace.
Retro clothes revival and hip idols
The term hipster is today often associated with the revival of fashion trends from the 1950s and 1960s. It is logical since the term hipster was coined in that period. While back then it denoted a person roaming from town to town, drinking liqueur, indulging in free sexual intercourses and supporting beat poets, we all know what it refers to today. However, the hipsters of the 21st century exploit the fashion of the 1950s a lot when it comes to nowadays trends.
When it comes to men’s retro items, one of the most typical items from that period that hipsters of today adore wearing is fedora hats. Just remember how hip and cool Jean-Paul Belmondo looked in that ground-breaking and beautifully shot movie Breathless. Actually, that movie is not only the fashion godfather of the fedora hat but of the tweed jacket, as well, which Belmondo also wore in that movie. Before him, Humphrey Bogart also used to wear these hats in his movies. Both these actors and their attitudes are looked up to by today’s retro lovers.
One of the most obvious today-retro details from those decades when it comes to women’s clothes today are poodle skirts with dots, usually paired with chiffon scarves.
In addition to that, both men and women wear hip glasses, just like the ones that were worn by such greats as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison.
Swimming back in time – retro swimwear
Not only that regular casual clothes are experiencing a comeback of the 1950s and 1960s, but this trend has spread to swimwear, as well. Bikinis just like the one Brigitte Bardot wore in the 1956 movie And God Created Woman are becoming a hit with girls and women all over the world. Bardot literally launched the bikini as a clothing item that would become something that we know and wear today. These days such bikinis are again hot stuff and girls and women are craving for having them.
Except from bikinis, women are buying one-piece swimsuits inspired by the 1950s and 1960s, as well. It is hard to decide which ones look better. Both these types of swimming suits that are made on the basis of those old models are a fresh breeze on the sultry and dull catwalk of G-strings and show-it-all trends that have been dominant over the last few years.
It might be due to the threat of a nuclear war that was so terrifying in the 1950s that their clothes looked to nicely designed and functional. They wanted to celebrate the beauty of life through music, cinema, and fashion, not knowing for how long they would be able to do it. Whatever the cause was, we are grateful for that and we are still proudly wearing items inspired by that period as an homage to beautiful clothes and larger-than-life pop and fashion idols.
