For an Indian woman saree is personification of simplicity, practical comfort and luxury. When she drapes saree around her, it does not just remain yards of cloth which she wraps around her body, it becomes her pride, her grace and her style statement. Saree is one such attire which fits all; whether you are fat, thin, short, tall a saree will fit you like a glove! But it is also important to know how to wear a saree as well as to k now how to wear a saree in different style.
 

Wearing saree is one of the oldest traditions of Indian women. This nine yard ancient and exotic drape has withstood test of time for over five thousand years now. Many modern fashions of clothes have come and gone, but none has quite touched the popularity and significance of a saree for any given Indian woman. But for those who have never worn a saree before, it can be a bit of mystery and also if you don’t know how to wear a saree properly, let us warn you it can be a disaster. So, to avoid embarrassment in crowd of the whole nine yards sliding away from your body or you tripping over a clumsily worn saree, here are a few tips for you to note down when you are wearing a saree. There are the basic steps:

 

  • Petticoat (long skirt like worn beneath the saree) and blouse(a tight-fitting top which ends just below the bust line) are the most essential under garments needed to wear a saree
  • Unfold the saree to its full length and drape it around your waist by tucking each of its sides equally on the edge of the petticoat. Drape it one full round from left to right.
  • Make seven to eight pleats of about five inches each from the tuck-end side
  • Hold the pleats up together so that they fall straight and even through out the entire length of your saree from your petticoat
  • Tuck in the pleats on edge of the petticoat. Make sure that that you tuck them slightly on the left side below the naval.
  • Take the remaining length and pass it over your left shoulder and pin it to the blouse to keep it from falling off. This is called the ‘pallu.’

 

Voila! You are now draped into a saree! Stand in front of the mirror and see how elegant and pretty you look.
There are also different styles of wearing a saree. Once you have mastered the basic method you can further dig deep into the saree wearing art and learn more about how to wear a saree in different styles. There are manu different styles like:

 

  • North India Style, better known as the Gujrati style where the ‘pallu’ is draped over the right shoulder.
  • In Maharashtriyan Style, the nine yard is neatly at the back of the waist and the ends of the sari tied in the front and wrapped around the legs.

 

There are many other different styles like the Dravidian, Madisaara, Kodagu, Mundum Neryathum Style, Tribal Styles etc. Each style has different significance and characteristic.
