Let’s Talk About Green Fashion

The world has gone relentless in trying to go green. Everything from Earth Hour festivities across the globe, to the latest eco-friendly houses, cars, and various gizmos tells how people are becoming more aware of their social responsibility to take care of Mother Earth. Now, as a quintessential extension to this greener lifestyle, there is eco-fashion.

Eco fashion is a design philosophy that advocates the creation of products that positively impact the environment. From handmade pieces of jewellery, to custom vegan shoes, you’d be surprised to know the many fashion products you can add to your wardrobe to help save our planet.

Eco-Fabric

Eco-fabrics are getting the attention of more environmentalists and fashion designers. Unlike traditional cotton fabrics, these eco-friendly fibres are not treated with pesticides and other chemicals that are essentially environmental contaminants.

The zero-waste seamless knitting technology, for example, allows for the production of an already complete garment without the traditional cutting and sewing process. This technology, in turn, not only provides better comfort and fit as it eliminates seams entirely; it also drastically cuts down on intensive post labour work. Because seamless knitting technology makes use of digital design programs, it essentially allows for better design structures across the entire garment. Finally, seamless knitting technology helps the environment by keeping production waste to the bare minimum. It also reduces the need to chemically grow raw materials such as cotton and wool.

Eco-Accessories

Eco Friendly AccessoriesWood has always been the perfect material for creating lightweight, durable and elegant accessories. From necklaces and bracelets to watches and even sunglasses, the use of wood in everyday fashion is slowly becoming more and more popular. The simple reason being that wooden pieces of jewellery, apart from looking hip and sophisticated all at the same time, are sustainable and generally friendly to the environment.

Moreover, there is a growing movement among the fashion community that advocates the use of reclaimed wood in making these jewelleries, thereby preserving some of the world’s most precious raw materials into classy wearable treasures.

Vegetarian Footwear

If you are planning to jump into the green bandwagon, and you might as well should, consider wearing faux leather shoes instead of the authentic leather. Not only are you supporting non-cruelty against animals, but you are also advocating fashion alternatives that are just as classy and exotic like the real ones.

You might also want to take it up a notch take on vegetarian shoes. Vegetarian shoes are essentially made of non-leather materials such as canvas, hemp, polyurethane, rubber, spandex, and even cotton. For those who are a little too comfortable with leather footwear, there are composite materials that specifically imitate the properties of leather, such as the various proprietary blends of cotton-polyurethane.

If you think these vegan footwear aren’t classy enough, you might want to think again. Anne Hathaway used a number of vegan shoes in her role as Fantine in the movie Les Miserables. During the Oscars, she gracefully walked herself through the red carpet with a pair of chic and vegan-friendly heels.
