Stars Rocking Big Jewells At Cannes Film Festival 2013
Every spring the glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival attracts the film industry’s most luminous stars like moths to a flame. But not all that glitters is gold. Silver, diamonds and emeralds also have a place of honour on the red carpet. Now that we’re gearing up for the 2014 Cannes festival, let’s look back at 2013’s event. Whether it was famous necklaces or eye-catching earrings, cinema’s glitterati had their baubles on full display.
Modern Elegance
If Jessica impressed with her old-style Hollywood flair, Sharon Stone made waves with a glammed up beach-tossed look that included a beautiful De Grisogono multi-strand cabochon emerald and white diamond necklace. Although the Geneva-based company is known more for its black diamond designs, the white diamonds helped set off Sharon’s sun-kissed skin with a little more sparkle.
But De Grisogono didn’t steal all of the Cannes thunder. Chopard was also on full display on the red carpet. Originally founded by Swiss watchmaker Louis-Ulysse Chopard and helmed by German jeweller Karl Scheufele, Chopard certainly proved it could take France by storm. Chopard’s new environmentally sustainable Green Carpet Collection was on display, namely on Marion Cotillard’s earlobes. Mined from fair trade certified gold the collection includes floral gold earrings and a white gold and diamond bracelet. Jane Fonda sported a beautiful Chopard ruby drop choker while Lana del Ray and Jennifer Lawrence chose to flaunt emerald and diamond earrings from the Swiss company. Italian actress Ornella Muti also opted for emeralds, donning an emerald and sapphire necklace from Avakian. Among all the emeralds French actress Louise Bourgoin proved diamonds are a girl’s best friend by choosing a pair of sparklers from Louis Vuitton.

Old Hollywood glamour
The pièce de résistance of the festival was the magnificent sapphire and diamond necklace worn by “The Help” star Jessica Chastain. No ordinary necklace, it was originally owned by Elizabeth Taylor herself. The necklace, a gift from Taylor’s husband Richard Burton on her 40th birthday, is a Bulgari and features a 65-carat sapphire in the centre.
To add an additional dash of colour she also donned the screen siren’s sapphire and diamond ring.

Bollywood glitz
The typical extravagance of Bollywood was somewhat toned down in the jewels of its brightest female star. Aishwarya Rai chose diamonds for her Cannes look, selecting the quiet delicacy of diamond stud earrings and a simple gold bangle. Fellow Bollywood heroine Vidya Balan drew more attention with her enormous gold earrings set with rubies and her gold kada bracelets all designed by Indian design house Amrapali. She also added a hint of sub continental custom to the festival with a traditional Marathi golden nath, a type of nose ring typically worn by brides. The nath was a popular accessory at the festival. Sonam Kapoor donned a large pearl version of the traditional ornament.
From elaborate looks to simple elegance, jewellery on show at Cannes 2013 added a dash of glamour to the proceedings. No matter if a starlet or an industry stalwart, jewellery really is the must have for any Cannes beauty strolling the red carpet.
