The Power of a Focused Mind
“The future you see is the future you get” – Robert G Allen.
Have you ever stopped to think about the fact that where you are right now is the end result of all the decisions you made in life…all your thoughts, words, actions (and lack of actions) led you to this point?
It seems difficult to convince people that the same things that got them where they are now can also be used to take them where they WANT to go.
Why is that?
In the movie Glengarry Glen Ross, there is a scene in which the Real Estate Company’s motivational expert played by Alec Baldwin tells the salesmen the secret to success is to Always Be Closing!
His point was very simple. Each salesman’s mind should always be focused on the one thing that will assure success…closing deals!
If the salesmen are always focused on closing deals, they can avoid other distractions that divert their focus into unproductive areas.
It’s the same with life in general, to be successful in life we need an inspirational dream or goal and we should focus our attention on it often.
Why? Because…the future you see is the future you get!
And therefore it’s important to ensure the future you envisage is the future you want.
Now obviously the future you want is going to be pretty awesome, right? It should be so awesome that every time you think about it, it makes you happy…so awesome it gets you excited.
If you keep your mind focused on the future you want, your mind will quite naturally steer you towards it. It will scan your memory banks and your external world looking for clues that will help bring you toward it.
What you focus your attention on is critically important to your entire life. Our mind aligns our thoughts and actions towards the things we give our attention to, so if you focus your attention on that thing that you most desire in life; if you think about if often in all of its details and get excited about it, your mind will quite naturally start taking the necessary steps to bring that thing into your reality.
You will start to notice things you wouldn’t otherwise have noticed; things intended to help move you closer to the reality you desire.
But let’s be clear about something…just thinking about that thing you desire won’t result in it suddenly showing up at your doorstep one day. You have to do the same thing you’ve had to do throughout your life to obtain ALL the other things you desired…you have to act.
Remember that girl or guy who caught your eye in high school or college; the one you so desperately wanted to meet and talk to and go on a date with? Did you just sit around and hope they called or did you do something to make it happen?
That wonderful vacation you took, the one you’d been aching to take, the one that got you excited just thinking about it…did you simply stare at the brochure and hope it happened or did you take the necessary steps to make it happen?
And so it is with any other thing you want in life, you have to take action to help make them happen.
Bringing your desired future reality into existence starts out with a very simple but crucial step…you have to define in your own mind what it is you desire.
And then you have to focus on it. Not to the point where it’s all you think about, but enough that it’s the predominant thought you turn to when you have time.
By focusing your attention on your desired future reality, ideas will pop into your head of things you can do and ways you can bring that dream into reality. Some ideas may be a bit wacko while others may bedarn good ideas that deserve pursuing. And every once in a while you will have a eureka moment…a moment where the perfect solution to making your dream a reality will pop into your head.
When that happens, don’t pass that eureka moment off as a bit of luck. It happened because your mind was actively looking for it while you were carrying on with your life.
