What New York Fashion Week Telling Us About Spring 2014?
New York Fashion Week has recently finished, with all eyes now moving to London for the equivalent event in the UK capital. The central attraction of the New York event was the focus on fashions that are set to hit the shops in time for spring 2014. Of course, as these fashion events feature the very best designers from around the world, we have to use them to predict how the garments displayed are going to inspire the buyers and merchandisers in high street stores to come up with something that is affordable for consumers.
What are the hottest trends that we saw in New York that we should prepare to see in shops in the coming months?
Hot Patterns
Patterns and prints have been a huge part of fashion in recent years, and this trend is set to continue into spring 2014. As more people get used to wearing such styles, designers are getting more daring with what they create. The Libertine collections that were on display during New York Fashion Week were a clear indication of this.
Although stripes and checks have been on display, there’s was a real focus on both tribal patterns and eclectic ones that seem to be a collection of randomness more than anything especially uniform and well thought out. However, as the fight to come up with unique designs is more intense than ever before, such products are set to dominate. Get set to see some never before seen patterns in shops early next year thanks to New York Fashion Week.
Summer Neutrals & Pastels
While spring fashion retains an element of needing to keep warm as the winter weather hasn’t quite gone for good, it always looks towards the summer with excitement and anticipation. Early 2014 will give you a real flavour of the summer, which is going to be filled with neutral colours.
We’ll be looking at flimsy shirts worn with above the knee skirts or oversized t-shirts worn with dark skinny jeans and boots as the key outfits to build using these colours.
If neutral colours don’t do enough for you, then cowgirl style will make an appearance once again. This look will allow you to wear pastel colours and combine fitted shirts with high waist skirts and the footwear of your choice.
Combining the Seasons
Designers have often been worried about combining different looks between seasons, but they seem to have embraced this potential trend with aplomb while thinking of the future. There have been some great looks on display at New York Fashion Week over the last week. The best is unquestionably the winter jumper, or jacket, look paired up with shorts and casual summer footwear.
This trend gives you a great opportunity to continue experimenting with layering into the spring. We all love being able to wear warm clothing with garments and accessories usually associated with the summer, whether that be a pair of sunglasses or a pair of sandals.
New York Fashion Week did a great job of setting the scene for Spring 2014. We now move onto London and begin to get even more excited about what’s to come in future months.
