Dream On… The Essential Guide To Choosing Your Mattress

Spread the love

You spend a third of your life in bed so you shouldn’t compromise when selecting a mattress as it is a   majorinvestment. A good quality mattress should last at least 10 years, so you should buy the very best you can afford. The best mattresses support our bodies in a way that keeps our spines in their natural, neutral position.

Having a good quality mattress can promote a deeper, more refreshing sleep by giving you better support for your neck and back. Comfort is the most important factor when it comes to choosing which mattress is right for you, however there are a number of factors that you need to consider. Despite popular belief, a firm mattress doesn’t mean that it is going to be the best for you. It all depends on how good the supporting structure is. The better the structure is your back, neck and spine will be supported no matter how hard the mattress is.

“Spend as much as you can afford,” advises Stephanie Parsons of Lombok. “It always strikes me as absurd that people will spend £3,000 or £4,000 on a sofa but much less on a bed where they will spend a crucial eight hours every night.”

Support
Royal MattressOnce you have fixed the budget, the next priority is looking for the right kind of support. Lombok’s Hypnos range of luxury mattresses all feature the latest technology; ReActive pocket springs that gently mould to the shape of your body, reacting to your movement and giving the best possible support, comfort and seamlessly adjusting to your every move.

“I often get customers asking for an orthopaedic mattress, but all that means is a hard one. Unless you have a medical reason for needing an orthopaedic mattress, you may not feel the full benefits and there are a number of other factors to consider such as body weight and the position in which you sleep.”

Attributes

When selecting a mattress you should look for two things: the number of active turns in a single continuous pocket spring as this determines how firm the mattress is, and the quality of upholstery and filling which is a helpful guide to measure the comfort of the mattress.

“With pocket spring mattresses, the firmness is largely dictated by the amount of active turns in a spring. These range from six to ten” says Stephanie. “A high-quality mattress such as our Belmont style has an eight pocket spring system and a soft cotton and lamb’s wool filling that enhance the springs. The very best mattresses will have a horse hair filling, which breathes well and acts like more tiny springs.”

When looking at a new mattress, remember that tufted styles (these look like they have buttons going through them) are better as this means the filling is contained and you will avoid it moving around within the mattress. Good quality, hand side stitching indicates that the springs are contained in pockets, which will be much more effective than other coil or open spring mattresses that are available on the market.
