Safety Jewelry Cleaning Guide
Jewels need to be cleaned every now and then in order to be shiny and good-looking. What you need to know is when you should do this and how often.
Next time you are about to use your jewelry collection, take a look at it. Check if it needs cleaning. Your bangles, earrings and rings may need a little touch-up.
What cleaners you should NOT use
Some cleaning products are not only inefficient, but they can also harm the jewels. DIY cleaners made of ammonia, toothpaste and glass cleaning products can have have a bad effect on the items. If you want to give a safe clean to your jewels, you had better use specialized commercial cleaners that are designed to work for jewelry. Below we have provided a table with the most appropriate cleaners available on the market. However, If you aren’t willing to spend money on special solutions and still think DIY products will work, we suggest you take a look at our tips.
How to clean diamonds
Prepare a solution of water and ammonia. Add ¼ cup of ammonia and one cup of warm water into a bowl. Dip the diamonds into the solution for about 20 minutes. Next, with a soft toothbrush scrub gently the items, carefully working your way from one side to the other. When you are done, rinse well with warm water. Place on a tissue and let dry. If the diamond has a platinum setting, this method should work just fine as well.
How to clean gold
Make a solution of two drops of dishwasher and two cups of warm water. Dip the gold into the solution and let rest for about 15 minutes. When the times is up, scrub gently with a soft toothbrush. Make sure you rinse well. Use a soft cloth to dry the items.
How to clean pearls
To clean pearls you need a cotton cloth, dish washing liquid and warm water. In a bowl, add a couple of drops of dish washing liquid and two cups of warm water. Grab a cotton cloth and dip it into the solution. It has to be slightly dampened, not dripping. Start rubbing the pearls, treating each one individually. When you are done, let them dry overnight.
How to clean silver
If your silver tarnishes, use a silver-polishing cloth to clean. The same thing can be done using silver-cleaning fluid. Or you may as well rinse it with warm water. After that make sure it dries completely before you wear it again, or store it away.
CAUTION: Do not use abrasive cleaners that can scratch the items. Toothpaste is not recommended either.
We should note that silver cleaners work for silver but they are not appropriate for platinum or gold. They won’t harm gold items but they won’t clean them either.
How to clean earrings
Put the earrings in a mug. Boil the kettle. When it is ready, pour the boiling water into the mug making sure you cover the earrings. Let them soak for about an hour. When the time has elapsed, take the earrings out of the water. Using a cloth or a tissue sheet gently dry the items. Take a jewelry cleaning cloth and rub the earrings to make them shiny.
How to clean necklaces
Using little vinegar and a toothbrush should work just fine. Gently scrub the necklace with a toothbrush dipped into vinegar. This will make it really shiny.
